Friday, July 23, 2010.

We have officially wrapped up The Borough Most Thorough program at the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club and we had a blast. Thanks for joining us again for this program. We are so proud of your dedication and accomplishments. Your tracks sound A-Mazing! We look forward to watching your Wanga Belly music video one day! Don’t forget to check back on your photos and videos and see you at the Subtext Festival’s launch party!

Thanks to the camp councillors: Keysha, Tiffany and Chris for making this week flow so well. And special thank you to these youth for missing their trip to Kew Beach, their swimming excursion and their movie day to spend time with us! Continue to work hard in your journeys and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! And thank you for letting me be part of your track! Yeah! I’ll always have your back! 🙂

ESBGC Tracks It Down

We are coming to the wrap-up of The Borough Most Thorough at the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club as the week comes to an end. There has been so much action happening at this club with all the kids’ “revved up and ready to go” attitude.

Today, these musical geniuses got the chance to have a simulated studio experience. Within each group, these youth came up one by one to experience what it would be like when it came down to recording. Our instructor Dan-e-o made sure to give them helpful advice as they practiced:

1 – Don’t bop or move around or jingle anything as you sing or rap! The mic picks up all the little sounds too even though it’s great that you are feeling the music.

2 – Make sure you are facing the microphone as you sing or rap! We want to make sure we record you properly!

3 – Get that sheet of lyrics memorized! It will be much easier in the studio when you are not stumbling for words. Also, listeners will be able to feel that passion and emotion coming from your lyrics when you are not reading it off of a sheet. It seems that almost everyone has their lyrics memorized, which is great to see.

Great work today in the workshop guys. Sorry you didn’t go swimming but it was still nice to see you there. See you tomorrow! Come ready to record and remember what Dan-e-o said: Don’t touch the equipment! Ask him or Future(our engineer) to help you out!

Words of the day? …Layering, ad libs, and harmonizing!

Music Comes to the Club

Week 1 at Dorset Park has passed and now we have started with our new group of musicians at the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club. There is no doubt that there are a lot of talented people at the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club. In fact, it seems that we have more singers than rappers this time around! Nevertheless, expect fun-filled and mind-blowing music tracks from this group by the end of the week!

Today we got started on writing out our lyrics. There will be a total of 3 songs produced at ESBGC since they are a smaller group, adding up to 9 youth in total. But that’s not to say they are not qualified for the task! Today was only day 2 and everyone seems to have at least half of their lyrics already completed.

Our vocal coach Terina, rap instructor Daniel, and of course I, Jen have been working closely with these kids today to crank out the beats and lyrics. It is looking very promising! …Perhaps I will end up “spitting some sick beats” before this week is over as well.

Cheers all around! 😀
